Het verhaal
These limestone homes – known by the locals as trulli – in southern Italy look something like an up-turned ice-cream. The limestone roofs are the cone, and the whitewashed walls are the blobs of ice-cream. Built using an ancient technique known as dry-stone construction – AKA not using mortar to hold the stones together – the houses at Alberobello have been marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. During your visit here, you can wander through the bustling area of Rioni Monti, where you’ll find boatloads of shops, cafes and restaurants to dip in and out of. Or, in Rione Aia Piccola, Alberobello’s iconic residential area, the narrow streets lined with over 1,000 well-kept trulli are ideal for a relaxing stroll.
