The inside story
Considered the “Western Marvel”, the Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island surrounded by moving sands and crashing waves. One of the most visited places in France, the island is located about one km off the country’s north western coast between Normandy and Brittany. Most of the time, the site is surrounded by sandbanks and only becomes an island when the tides are high. A causeway connects the mainland to the island.
The medieval village built up on the island is crowned by a beautiful fortified Abbey dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. The whole site is classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site and has barely changed since the Middle Ages. In addition to the spectacular Abbey, the medieval walled island is also home to museums, hotels, restaurants and boutiques. Whether visiting on a multi-stop excursion or on a day trip from Paris, this beautiful site is a must-see for anyone visiting France!
