Riverfront trails, historic brick buildings, a craft scene that rivals those of much larger cities, Spokane, in Washington State, boasts cool and hip vibes.
Set in eastern Washington near the edge of the Rocky Mountains, Spokane blends outdoorsy energy with just the right dose of urban grit. The downtown buzzes with indie shops, coffee shops and art deco architecture, while the Spokane River and its dramatic falls run right through the middle of it all. It’s a city where you can hike, catch a local play, hit a brewery and be back in time to watch sunset over the bluffs. And the food? Think farm-to-table everything, huckleberry treats and seriously good coffee. Spokane’s got a slower pace than the state’s capital city, Seattle. But it’s got soul, scenery and its own kind of vibes.
1. Wander through Riverfront Park
Right in the heart of the city, this massive park gives you waterfalls, sculptures, gardens and even a vintage 1909 carousel. It’s Spokane’s gathering place, ideal for walking, people-watching, or hopping on a scooter to zip across the Monroe Bridge.
2. Ride the SkyRide over Spokane Falls
For a different angle on the river, the SkyRide takes you right above the falls. It’s a short but sweet cable car ride that gives stunning views, especially in spring when the water’s roaring.
It’s a must for first-timers.
3. Explore South Hill and Manito Park
South Hill is one of Spokane’s prettiest neighbourhoods, with tree-lined streets and classic craftsman homes. At its centre, Manito Park is a garden lover’s dream. Stroll through the Japanese Garden, the rose beds, or just find a bench and soak it all in.
