The inside story
Lake Mälaren, commonly known as Lake Mälar, is a lake in eastern Sweden, near Stockholm. The lake is the third largest in Sweden and covers an area of 440 square miles. There are over 1,200 islands that are situated on the lake, which makes it a very popular residential and resort region. Amongst these islands you can find numerous archaeological sites, museums, castles and other attractions worth seeing.
Drottningholm Palace, home to the Swedish royal family, is located on the island of Lovon. Drottningholm, which means Queen's islet, was built in the late 16th century and served as the summer residence for the royal court most of the 18th century. The palace was abandoned in the middle of the 19th century, but after several renovations, it is open to the public today. Since 1991, the palace was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Birka was an important trading centre for during the Viking Ages, is situated on the island of Björkö. It is regarded as Sweden's oldest town and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. If you want to check out the way of life during the Viking era, pay a visit to the Birka Museum.
