What to expect

Wedged between the Atlantic and the Monchique Mountains, the Vicentine Coast has stunning landscapes, lots of flora and fauna but very few people. This is a wild world where you least expect it. Highlights include Costa Vicentina Natural Park, Carrapateira and Sagres. Joao, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘There's not much pristine coastline left in southern Europe, but the Costa Vicentina has that undiscovered, end of the world feeling. Huge cliffs shelter broad beaches washed by Atlantic waves, and timeworn villages punctuate the coastline here and there.'

On this small group tour with a maximum of 16 guests, you'll head to the village of Aljezur, in the heart of Costa Vicentina Natural Park, and on to Carrapateira. Here, the views over the dunes are a sight to behold. Next, drive towards the Atlantic and hug the coastline, taking in views of tall schist cliffs and swathes of gold sand flanked by imposing rocks. Break for lunch in a seaside restaurant and savour a shellfish cataplana – the Algarve's signature dish.

In the afternoon, head to Cape St Vincent – the most southwesterly point in Europe – where the cliffs rise 75 metres from the sea. Your adventure has one final stop at Sagres, a little fishing harbour with a big history. It was here where Prince Henry the Navigator planned his voyages of discovery, while today's visitors are more likely to be here for the excellent surf breaks at the wonderful beaches nearby, and the low-key attractions of this remote town.

Benagil Cave and dolphin-spotting catamaran cruise

Setting off from Vilamoura Marina, you'll glide along the coast towards the Benagil Cave. This sea cave is known for its huge sunlit dome and golden rock walls. Along the way, the crew will point out highlights like the Arch of Triumph, Captain's Cave and Praia do Submarino, and will tell you a bit about the local wildlife. Keep an eye on the water, too, as there's a chance to spot common and bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. If conditions allow, you can also dive in for a swim before the catamaran heads back to the marina.

Sunset cruise from Vilamoura

The Algarve looks good regardless of what time of day you see it, but sunset is something else here. This evening cruise takes you out on the water for a laidback sailing right as the sun starts to go down, meaning you get a really romantic look at the coast as the sky lights up in streaks of pink, orange and red, then into deep purple. You'll sail on a boat that's decked out with a bar and a lounge, plus it has free Wi-Fi – perfect for uploading those pretty sunset pics to social media. But sunset isn't the only thing you'll get a good look at while you're out and about, since your sailing takes you past beaches, rock formations and hidden coves. The Algarve looks good regardless of what time of day you see it, but sunset is something else here. Sunset catamaran cruise on the Algarve’s Lagos coast

For a seriously laidback cruise, your small group will set sail in the late afternoon on a comfy catamaran, seeking out the famous rock formations of the Algarve's coast. The golden hour before sunset casts a dramatic look over the rugged cliffs of Dona Ana and the limestone towers and arches of Ponta da Piedade. After you've snapped plenty of pics, there's a chance to take a dip in the sea while it's still light. Don't say we didn't warn you, you could get serious face ache from smiling at the views along this wild stretch of Lagos coastline.
